If are helping "Beta Test" you should report bugs and feel free to ask questions about the program's commands, it is best to email me at tempnulbox (at) yahoo (dot) com and put "DANCAD3D (tm) 24x7 SUPPORT SUBMISSION" in the email subject line so your mail is not deleted as junk. See Section: 8 for more information about support related issues. I want you to ask questions so long as they are on the subject and relate to the current program's commands. If you do not get some kind of reply assume I did not get your message and resend it and also try voice mail, postal form, etc. All submissions and correspondence become the sole property of Daniel H. Hudgins to do with as he sees fit, so stay on subject.

Discussion of Font Files.

Quick discussion of idea: DANCAD3D (tm)'s automatic lettering commands allow for the use of different font (type-face) files. To make it easier to select the right font file table type drawings showing all the characters available may be included in the sub-sections of this section. Additionally DANCAD3D (tm) may let you create your own font files for use with its [C]alligraphy commands simply by drawing each character in the drawing editor, in accordance with the requirements of the font table size limits.

Steps to carry out testing fonts:

  1. Pick one of the [C]alligraphy commands.

  2. Look at the font tables.

  3. Decide whether you want thickened or thin line text.

  4. Enter the name of the *.FON file when prompted.

Detailed discussion of idea: DANCAD3D (tm) can save and load font type-face files. The *.FON file contains the line end point data of each font. With the [C]alligraphy commands you can scale the size of the text to fit any size drawing. Some of the fonts have multiple strokes to vary the line thickness and add serifs. Those fonts that have multiple strokes (marked with an asterisk below) should have the line width set to make the lines thick enough that you do not see the individual parallel line segments in the characters. When using DANPLOT.EXE (tm) the engraving tool can have a diameter large enough to not need to have DANCAD3D (tm) thicken line segments. If thickened line segments are needed with DANPLOT.EXE (tm) you can save the drawing or text to a file through DANCAD3D (tm)'s [S]ave [I]ndustry [H]P-GL command, then reload the HP-GL file with the [L]oad [I]ndustry [H]P-GL, re-center the drawing or text, and save the tool path in ASCII format.

In addition to the *.FON font files some fonts are supplied with *.808 and *.814 screen font files. The screen font files are loaded automatically when needed and you do not need to enter the names of the screen files. The screen fonts need to be in the same directory as the *.FON file for them to load properly.

DESCRIPTION OF FONTS:

DANCAD3D FON Default font file for DANCAD3D (tm).

DANCAD87 FON Default font file for DANCAD87 (tm).

DCF10V FON Vertical DANCAD3D (tm) font with slashed zero.

BLOCK20 FON Font that uses a minimum number of line segments, slashed zero.

MODERN10 FON Modern font with slashed zero.

GREEK3 FON General purpose simple Greek font (partial ISO 8859-7).
GREEK3 808 Screen font for use with GREEK3.FON in CGA mode.
GREEK3 814 Screen font for use with GREEK3.FON in other modes.

GREEK4 FON * Serif Greek font, to be used with line width set.
GREEK4 808 Screen font for use with GREEK4.FON in CGA mode.
GREEK4 814 Screen font for use with GREEK4.FON in other modes.

RUSSIAN2 FON * Russian font with serifs, above 128 like KEYRUS.
RUSSIAN2 808 Screen font for use with RUSSIAN2.FON in CGA mode.
RUSSIAN2 814 Screen font for use with RUSSIAN2.FON in other modes.

INTRNAT1 FON Non-serif font for special international text.
INTRNAT1 808 Screen font for use with INTRNAT1.FON in CGA mode.
INTRNAT1 814 Screen font for use with INTRNAT1.FON in other modes.

INTRNAT2 FON * Serif font for special international text.
INTRNAT2 808 Screen font for use with INTRNAT2.FON in CGA mode.
INTRNAT2 814 Screen font for use with INTRNAT2.FON in other modes.

Any of the fonts marked with an asterisk (i.e. *) should have the line width set to a number larger than 1 when they are used for large size text. A prompt comes up when you use the calligraphy commands or you can use the lines drawing sub-menu or the macro command LINETYPE to set the line's width for the lettering by its element number. Use the [R]ound line type option when using thickened line width in lettering.

To use these fonts enter the path\filename for the selected font whenever asked for the font to use. The manual lettering commands are located in the [C]alligraphy sub-menu from the [D]raw sub-menu accessed by pressing [D] from the main menu. The automatic lettering macro commands may be listed in Appendix B.

DANCAD3D (tm) has facilities for you to make any number of your own special fonts. All you have to do is draw each character from the front view, using the font grid as a guide, and save the individual characters in ASCII form with the extension as the decimal value of the characters ASCII code value. The maximum number of line segments used for all of the characters loaded into the font table is limited, but generally adequate for fonts like the examples.

EXAMPLE: MY_FONT.65

In the above the letter A is saved with the extension .65, the ASCII code number for A, so that the character can be assigned to the correct key when the conglomerate file with the *.FON extension is made. You can read the necessary ASCII code numbers off of the accompanying tables.

To help you draw the characters there is a special [F]ont grid. To get the font grid press [G] from the [S]et-up sub-menu from the drawing editor's root menu.

After you have saved all the characters you want in your font press [F] [L] [T] from the main menu then press [F] [S] [F] from the main menu. To view the font to check and see if there are any mistakes press [L] [D] from the main menu.

See also the tutorial on making your own fonts in SECTION: 3.4.10.0 and SECTION: 9.18.10.0.

When entering text in response to DANCAD3D (tm)'s text entry prompts you can get the characters shown in the following tables by entering the keys that generate the ASCII codes 33 to 126. To enter the characters in the range 127 to 255 hold the [Alt] key down and enter the extended ASCII code number on the num-pad then let the [Alt] key up. You can enter the extended codes this way into your macros if you use a text editor that will accept the codes 127 to 255. You can enter the ASCII codes by holding the [Alt] key down when using the [E]dit block command in the [C]alligraphy menu of the drawing editor, or at the text prompt in the [L]ettering and [D]imensioning commands. If you have a German, or other special, character keyboard that generates the right code numbers for some of the special characters you will not need to use the [Alt] key for the codes your keyboard has extra keys for, just use the extra special keys on your keyboard.

The small numbers at the bottom of the rectangle that each character is in, in the font table of character drawings, tell you the ASCII code number for that character.
